Well, there are many reasons that I don't like Shakespeare, the first being that he glorified killing/suicide.
Hawkeye, I'm sure you'll figure out how to spell someday, but that obviously wasn't yesterday... maybe you will today |

REVIEWS
"Shakespeare... is the epitome of dullness." Elf of Rivendell
"A masterpiece... a blockbuster... a play guaranteed to put you to sleep." Llednevir fo fle

Those aren't to be taken seriously. I just felt like poking fun at those reviews on the backs of bestsellers while doing so with Shakespeare. Yes, its English is good, but I just don't like the content. |

I am saddened that you have no appreciation of the classics...what is this generation becoming? or perhaps I should ask: Where is it going? |

Where is it going? Uh... I have no idea...
But I'm not a Shakespeare fan, either. Not because I think it's wordy or too difficult to read. I don't.
I just don't enjoy it. Too many of his plays and sonnets are centered on emotions. And while I think that's always the case to a degree, Shakespeare takes things past the logical and the situations, if you stop to think about them, are contrived.
I mean, if your mother and uncle killed your father, what would YOUR first thoughts be? You'd be enraged and angry and scared, as was Hamlet. But would you feel GUILTY? Uh, no...
Would you put a pound of your own flesh on the line for a friend? Why not have HIM put a pound of his own on it and let him pay back the loan with your incoming money? ;)
And I could go on. The only thing I like about Shakespeare is his insults... He's the master of them! |

I don`t suppose that Shakespere always intended for his works to be logical. Yes, they play on human emotion, and strange (and usually somewhat unbelievable) situations, but I still hold that they are interesting-classics in a way...and a good example of what theater was like during the Elizabethan era.
And it is also rather difficult to find such amazing speeches in theatrical performances than those in some of Shakespere's plays....Julius Ceasar, the Merchant of Venice, Hamlet and many others. |

My love of Shakespear comes from his use of language. I love metaphors and all sorts of poetic figures of speech.
Melissa~ you have good point, Shakespear does tend to glorify things like killing and violence, and think that that is a good thing to point out.
For me, like I said, I just am a metaphor nut, and Shakespear is full of them. Call me wierd if you want, but I can't deny it, I know I am a strange creature....
If metaphors be the food of love, speak on. ( *yellow_hugegrin* ) |

I love poetry - I write some myself - though it is not that good.
Shakespeare is good - though I think some people tend to over-rate him. I like some of the newer poets. But some of the classics still live on - J.B. White, Emily Dickenson, etc.
Here is one of my own on the more depressing side:
Is It Over
Has it passed
like dew
in summer ray?
A breath that
seemed, to
last forever -
broke, at break
of day.
Is this the end
of what seemed true.
The seperation,
of me and you.
