| No, the sheriff will be in charge of arresting the villian, like BC and the aliens, he/she will be the town hero, on the small scale. |

| But that would be more the Mayor's job. We could always stretch his power's position. BTW, shouldn't it be the Mayor making the final decision? He's the mayor after all...he should decided if theres a Sherriff or not... |

Here is my decision:
I have no decision.
Instead, I have decided to leave this one up to the citizens. We will hold a referendum vote on the days of the 17th and 18th of this month (as in starting in five days and having the polls open for two days time). For this referendum to pass, allowing an election for the position of sheriff, the vote must be two-thirds or more in favor.
Details are forthcoming. This thread may be used for debating the pros and cons of the position.
If the referendum gets the two-thirds support needed to pass, then campaigns can begin in earnest on the 19th of this month for a May 1 & 2 election. If it does not get that level of support, well, the people will have spoken and said no.
I believe this is a fair way to settle the issue to the satisfaction of most here and leave the decision up to those who it effects most. Some may complain that 2/3rds is hard. Well, yeah. Referendums are not meant to be easy to pass on a whim. If you think we need a sheriff, start explaining why in order to win people over to vote in favor.
And if you don't like the idea, start (or in at least one case, continue) to set forth your reasons for opposition. |

I am going to have t oagree with Bennet Charles here, as I really do not see the need for another office. I will list just one or two reaasons why I think this, and then will see what everyone ultimately decides.
Something to this effect has probably been noted already, so I am just going to add my agreement. I feel there is no need at this time for a sheriff because:
1. No one has really come up with a job description....what will a sherrif
even accomplish, and what is the general purpose of the position? So
far, I have not heard anything mentioned that makes me think that one
would be beneficial or even necessary.
2. It is my feeling that a sherrif will simply confuse the issue. Most
importantly there is the mayor, then we have the "town villain" the
judges, the catastrophic member(or something?)....the positions are
begging to pile up and become confusing. Why add one more office to
the proverbial stack?
3. An election and or campaign for sherrif will cause the mayoral elections
to become an anti-climactic event...with so many elections the novelty,
the fun, and the general interest of the members is sure to diminish if
we are constantly caught up in campaigns et cetera.
All in all, at this time, to be brutally honest, I really see no need for a sherrif. Perhaps if there was some dire task that needed to be performed that only an elected sherrif could perform, I might reconsider, but as of now, there seems to be no apparent reason for such an office.
Well, that is my opinion (as much as it's worth) and I just wanted to share my opinion as it is right now. And of course, if given a strong reson why we really need a sherrif, I may reconsider, but right now I cast my vote "nay"....assuming we are voting on this... |

Dude! Err, Dudette!
You said one or two, not three
Well, I think the idea for the sherrif was to get some excitement going. If the mystery pans out well, I think it will suffice for the excitement to tide us over until the mayoral elections.
Anyone still want a sherrif? |

I don't and I'll be voting no. It's not that I "don't want competition." It's just that, as has been mentioned, there's no real job description, etc...
If, however, the people choose to have a sheriff over them, well, we can't really have two exciting things going on at once, so we could, I suppose, kill two birds with one stone. In a case like this, assuming the mystery is of the more intense kind, we could have the sheriff as the victim...! (KIDDING!)
Or is the mystery going to be more along the lines of "who stole Zwall's socks?" |

Yes, let us all know what type of mystery this will be!
As I really do not want to be the one who finds the socks...
(or the one who stole them for that matter ) |
