Felicity -
Just so you know, I can totally see where you are coming from with the abuse/rape deal. I've seen intstances of police 'not wanting to get involved'. So Jared, it does happen. Some cops just don't believe the abuse is going on, nor do they want to get involved with it. Thats just the way are world is sometimes. |

Thank you. I've been abused for 15 years of my life. I'm 21 years old and weight training and my father has quit his drinking and drugs. I was about to die or end up killing myself, but thanks to friends and pastors AND GOD, I grew up a very strong, independent person. No, I don't go to church as often as I should, but we're seeing a division of our church at the moment, people gossiping and being cruel to one another, I can't stand it.
Jared, it does happen and it's very very sad. I cry because I've seen these so called good Christian parents, slapping their kids around and thinking, "The Kid had it coming!" No one has a right to slap a child until they're battered and bruised.
Jared, do you think me an idiot? Do you think that I don't see the stuff that goes on? I'm 21 years old and how old are you? 17? You better start treating me with a bit more respect as a Christian and a lady. Because, I am a Lady of God! Then I'll starting giving you respect! Thank you! |

Just a quick note to Jared, I asked my grandmother and grandfather (who fought in WWII) about hamburgers and hotdogs. They both said they called them hamburgers and frankfurters. I asked if some people called them "liberty patty" or "liberty sausage", they both said they had never heard of either. Don't know if it really happened but it obviously wasn't as big a movement as this REDICULOUS movement to remove any "french" things from our foods. Also, how much of MY money is it costing to change the menu's that have "French Fries" in them? How much of MY money is it costing to pay to have all the computers updated with "Freedom Fries"? And how much is it going to cost after the war when people start thinking straight to go back? Nothing is free my boy and this ain't either!
BTW, I could be wrong here, but I was always told that most of our words that differ in spelling with Brittain are because American patriot's wanted to show that they were different from Brittain. Same reason we drink coffee instead of tea (which isn't bad now that I think about it) and why the rest of the world uses the metric system and we don't. Further evidence of this is when the American Confederacy started using the original spellings of words (which didn't stick around long after the end of the war) to try to win English aid. |

Jared needs to quit acting so proud and like he knows everything.
Police are not always perfect, Jared, and some of them do do wrong things sometimes!

Yes we are paying trillions of dollars for education - but where is that money going. Right now in Minnesota the debt that the State education is facing is temendous. For the University of Minnesota, their debt is so high right now that to counter act that they need to close three of their four campuses. Its real and its that huge. We need to get a hold of our spending. |
Yes, but I believe that Govenor Pawlenty is making some great strides in cutting the state spending-although given the large number of Democratic voters in that state, I am sure it will meet with plenty of opposition. Still, after Ventura, it is a nice change.

I believe you, Felicity.
I mean, why would people kid or exaggerate about things like that? It's disgusting and insensitive! |

Jared: Remember that wonderful govenement spending? The same happens with police/rescue/fire fighers/etc too. They are underfunded, thus sometimes they don't respond to 'minor' incedents. However, Im sure the HRS would have loved to hear about it.... But their solution wouldn't have been best, more than likely....
The funding issue is accross the board, and that is what complicates those protestor of this war, because the police are underfunded, under staffed, and portestors are in the thousands.
Gandalf: I have heard about renaming hot dogs, but on the news.
Yes, we are different from most other countries, and I could be wrong, but I do believe the metric system came around after America did.. Could be wrong. But as for English vs American spellings, well, at least on words like inflammable, that was changed to reduce confusion of immigrants. As for stuff like harbour, shoppe, theatre, I think it may have been for the reason you heard, bt it might have also been because it is easier and quicker.... Remember, Americans are lazy.... Yo, wassup, etc.... |

On the spelling issue...
In early America, the majority of Americans were illiterate. Those who could write often did so phonetically and there were often dozens of potentially acceptable spellings. Eventually, more common ones became standardized.
The same thing happened in England, by the way, but their standardization happened before ours did, with the acceptance of the first true dictionary, Johnson's, in the 1780s. By that time, remember, most of those who would be American citizens were already on this country's soil. |

Okay... So why do countries like Canada, New Zealand and Austrailia follow the Brittish spelling? If it (American dropping the English spelling) has nothing to do with England/Great Brittain, they why do they use the same spellings? Especially Austrailia that was colonized by England's uneducated and criminals. Just chance that they happened to standardize the same way they did versus us? |
