As a post-8-to12-year-old (and I do mean POST-), I concur with the overall sentiment here. A proven franchise like AIO doesn't need to come off as kiddish in order to maintain kid appeal. Indeed, the cartoon-style album art is probably due for re-evaluation. It implies the audio product is similar to the animated videos (a stretch, to be sure). As for Chris, her narration is a plus as long as she doesn't sound like she's talking down to the audience. The music, to me, seems pretty much on target.
Keep in mind that AIO was birthed expressly to reach the younger crowd. Even so, Focus surely recognizes that a significant portion of AIO's audience now falls into entirely different demographic catagories. The radio scripts have long since strayed from pre-junior high sensibilities (witness the gruesome and unnecessary scene of Armitage Shanks dying from a BRAIN TUMOR, for goodness sake). Obviously the audience has broadened age-wise. It's probably time for marketing to catch up.
If Focus would spin off a "teen-and-older" series using several existing Odyssey characters, the original series could concentrate more on kids and their parents, as originally envisioned. There! Not a new idea, I know, but a logical progression (in magazine tems, like moving from Clubhouse Jr. to Clubhouse to Brio to Brio and Beyond; perhaps the geriatric set will eventually have Brio and Wa-a-a-a-y Beyond.) All it would take for the new series is an expanded staff and several gazillion dollars and some assurance that enough ancillary products would be purchased to make the enterprise profitable. Sounds do-able to me! :-) |
