Posted: Tue Apr 05, 2005 4:56 pm Post subject: What is the Random Board and How to Use It |
|
As you may or may not have noticed, the board formerly known as Offtopic has had its name changed to The Random Board. At the same time, the Harlequin Theatre has had its name changed to General Discussion - a sensible name, I think.
This is, you might say, an expiriment in the Town Hall. It's a trial sort of thing. A phase that may pass.
So what is a Random Board? And how does one use it? Well, simply, it's a place where the threads are sort of like conversations. It's like sitting around a dinner table with friends and chatting about whatever - cracking some jokes - having a good time.
We'll see how things go. If you want to start a thread for you clan, or you want to have a thread for your war - this is the place to do it.
Let's be warned, though. This isn't a board for creating tension, for making enemies, or for badmouthing people. I patrol this little space on the internet, and believe you me, I will move and delete anything that makes this place less inviting for anyone.
Warm fuzzies aside, what does a post look like? Lots of things, really. But this isn't the Insanity forums - those died and are not coming back anytime soon - so if you post resembles "r00x0r the duckies are belong to us prepare the nuclean bomb zzzzzzz there it goes!" or something even remotely similar to that, it's not what we're looking for here. It's gone. Kaput.
On the other hand, if your topic at hand suddenly veers off from talking about that really cool website to a bunch of people laughing about an injoke from the days of yore: don't be suprised. Of course, if you want people to actually stay ontopic, that's what general discussion is for.
What, then, might a General Discussion board be? And how does one use it?
General Discussion is a more regimented board where you discuss the topics that the thread started with. This rule, and all other rules, apply to that forum in particular. It's more like having a meeting; you can't just talk about anything you want to anytime you want to. It's probably not the place to be cracking to many jokes about Jedis. Nothing wrong with tongue-in-cheek, but remember: the topic. Always, my children, the topic.
But what about the Imagination Station? I know, your craziness mostly used to go there, where it was quietly ignored by most people. Well, the Imagination Station will now serve its nomative function: to be a place for you to create.
That is to say, your poems, songs, comics, art - great place to put it for people to see. Way to go. You get a slap on the back, or maybe a high five.
We'd love some feedback on this, by the way. Over the next few days, I'm going to be moving some of Random's posts into GenDis, and some of the Imagination Station's posts to Random. So you may have to find your way around for a bit. But it won't be for long.

| Nope, just letting everyone know. If it was a threat, I would have used the baton. |

Feedback:
I guess I don't really see a reason to have two offtopic/general discusion/random boards. In my opinion, the less boards the better. It requires less clicking around for guys like me who get on here on Saturday or Sunday night for half an hour just to see if anything interesting is going on.
I actually liked the OLD, old version where everything was on one page. It's more convenient than having to look in 8 boards for new posts.
Keep it simple. 3 boards is a good number, maybe. Just my opinion. |
