I like it. But only men do it. Teens just let you do everything yourself.

I was talking about Londoners in general.

I think chilvary is great. Not only does it make you think of others before yourself, it also makes people feel like gentlemen and ladies. (or should ).

Laying down one's coat and kissing the hand is a bit too far, in my opinion. And yes, it can get to be so much 'helping' that it becomes annoying.

I agree with Carolita.

I think a girl should say thank you... I say it so often when doors are opened for me it's almost an automatic reflex. Kind of like, "Those flowers are really--thank you--pretty!"

I have this thing about clean hands, and I would go through a lot of hand sanitizer with that kind of custom! Wink

This is probably going to sound somewhat inane, but have you considered what mutations occur to bacteria when they are constantly assaulted with anti-bacterial products?

I have this thing about "super germs". Wink

I prefer not to consider such things, but that would be intersting to consider, I suppose. At this point, I don't use hand sanitizers too much, I don't think - am I at risk of being attacked by "super (bad) germs," Coralfish? Wink

I agree that a girl, or a guy, should thank a person who is holding a door for them. It's the polite thing to do. What I don't like is when somebody is going too far out of their way to hold a door, so that the other person feels rushed to get to the door because somebody has already been holding it for a few seconds, and you aren't up to the door yet. I would rather just open the door myself than feel like I should be grateful that I had to hurry so the other person wouldn't have to stand at the door forever. (I hope that made sense...)

Did your mother pound those words into you? ;)

My mother was constantly reminding me, when I was younger, when to say "Thank you" and "You're welcome." Somethings I think perhaps I say it too often and therefore people don't think I really mean it. I blame her, of course, for how awful I turned out. ;)

But I agree, a proper "Thank you" is in order for good deeds such as ruining coats and opening doors.

EDIT: Coralfish, there is nothing wrong with keeping extremely clean. Wink

Maybe she did... I don't remember. I thought I pounded those words into me (in the case of thanking guys when they open doors)... but it could have been her, I suppose.

Hmm, I didn't know that guys liked to be thanked when they hold the door open. I usually always say thank-you anyways because it's very nice of them, but I thought that it might be a little annoying for them to be thanked each time they do it.

With me, it's my deaf friends that open the door and it's kind of annoying to wait until you have their attention to say thank you, but I do anyways (ain't I grand? Wink ).
