What do you all think of Gender Neutral? There is this celebrity family that wanted there baby to be Gender Neutral. They had a girl. They gave this little girl (I guess when she was older) some trucks. She started calling them Mommy dump truck, and baby dump truck! Isn't that funny! She still has the heart of a girl wanting to play with dolls, and be a mommy!
So my point is, God made us to be female and male. Gender Neutral is not biblical. Do you agree?
By the way, this is my first topic in Impolite Company (I think!)!! |

| This may in fact be the first time that a former Secretary of the Treasury and current president of Harvard has been called a "celebrity." Just thought that might be worth pointing out. |

Is that the family who it was? I didn't know who it was. Just a celebrity. What do you think about it? I know you have a opinion. |

No!
She's referring to the Lawrence Summers brouhaha, which was actually about the Harvard President giving a lecture in an economic forum in which he stated that there were some differences between the genders. It doesn't seem like he said anything that most people would find controversial, but Nancy Hopkins practically fainted over the whole thing. (George Will had a most amusing observation about this.) |

Here's the full transcript of what Summers actually said, if anyone is interested.
The Harvard Crimson's summary of the controversy can be found here.
And if you're actually interested in the matter, I suggest doing a Google News search to locate some good columns on the subject by John Leo (U.S. News & World Report), Walter Williams (syndicated) and George Will (Chicago Sun-Times / syndicated). |

While I would agree with you if you're saying that the outrage over Mr. Summers remarks, many of which were most likely correct and all of which were well within the bounds of academic discourse, is misplaced, if not entirely detrimental, I am nevertheless not sure we're thinking of the same thing.
Since someone else asked me for clarification on the matter AIOfan11 brought up, let me say it here: No one was genetically altered! No child was rendered gender-neutral. Mr. Summers simply used, by way of example, the upbringing of his own child -- in a gender-neutral environment -- to make his point. All things considered, it was one of the weakest parts of his speech and probably shouldn't have been included, but many of his points were still valid.
If you're objecting to the liberal anger directed at Mr. Summers (himself a Democrat who was in Clinton's cabinet), pianokitty, then I join you in your objection. However, I have to wonder if a few people aren't entirely confused here. |
