This goes along with the world view some hold that there isn't a difference between men and women psychologically.

Actually, that statement falls exactly in line with the United Nation's official definition of [gender] according to its documents. The term was originally bracketed, because many nations have no such equivalent term in their language.
As expected, the UN did not define gender based on physical, human attributes, but rather society's expectations and/or the will of the parents.
Which, of course, is absurd. |
I don't think that expectations are the only factor, but they are a contributing factor. There was an experiment where a boy was raised as a girl, and while I don't remember all the details, I know that it did not turn out well, and the case helps support an innate sense of gender, not just societal ideas. However, the environment that a person is in has some effect on the person, in my opinion. (But I'd rather not have some kind of nature vs. nurture debate). God has made men and women differently - that is obvious. I'm just not sure that saying that because God made somebody female implies that they are required to like feeding dolls in frilly pink dresses or that saying because God made somebody male necessitates an obsession with power tools and football. Some people might fit into those categories, but I think that those distictions are influenced by the surronding society. |

I actually do agree here. And, I think it's interesting to note, so does Dr. Dobson. I seem to remember him saying something around the time he published "Bring Up Boys" (and it may be in that book as well) that such expectations can actually confuse a child. For example, if a boy is naturally artistic and musical instead of sporty and athletic, he becomes confused because his interests seem to match up more with society's expectations of females instead of males. Therefore, depending on circumstances, the child has a greater risk of becoming a homosexual.
Not all boys are into sports, GI Joes, and trucks. But I would argue that psychologically, they are all structured the same way. Not all girls are into pink, dresses, dalls, and make-up, but I would argue that psychologically, they are all structured the same way. |

I don't happen to believe there's anything wrong with a male who prefers to keep his room, or himself clean. |

My room is clean (my dorm anyway; my room at home is quite another story) and instead of playing sports, I provided the real entertainment at the games.
