Not only to maintain the board (technically), but to keep the content appropriate. If everyone had mod privileges, chaos would be the rule of the day. If no one had them, chaos would once again rule supreme (I could post links to examples, but to preserve sanity, I shall refrain). In essence, the mods not only act as a tech support team, but as a firewall.
