Scenes 8-10

SCENE EIGHT — Whit’s End
Whit’s End door opens and closes. Children are heard talking in the background.

DUSTIN
(amazed) Wow!

ELIJAH
This is an ice cream shop?

WOOTON
Ice cream shop, discovery emporium...whatever you want to call it.

SIMON
Nice place.

WOOTON
Yeah.

RICHARD
(thoughtfully) Just like I remembered it...

They walk up to the counter and sit down.

CONNIE
Hey, Wooton! Who’re your friends? (gasps) Richard!

RICHARD
Hi...Connie. Long time no see.

CONNIE
I can’t believe it’s you! Wow...

SIMON
You know Richard?

CONNIE
Well...of course! How do you know him?

SIMON, ELIJAH, DUSTIN & RICHARD
We’re cousins!

WOOTON
Uh...am I missing something here?

CONNIE
Wow! I thought you twins looked familiar...

SIMON
Simon Maxwell.

ELIJAH
Elijah Maxwell.

DUSTIN
I’m Dustin!

CONNIE
(bemused) Oh, well, I’m Connie. Huh, I never expected...seeing you here, Richard...I...

RICHARD
Connie. I get the point. (mutters) Seems I can’t go anywhere in this town without being recognized.

WOOTON
Could someone please explain this to me? All I know is that Simon’s family just moved in. (beat) I deliver his mail. (watch beeps) Oh. I gotta go. Mrs. Randolph wants me to prune her rosebushes.

CONNIE
Okay, bye, Wooton. I'll explain it all later!

WOOTON leaves.

RICHARD
(mutters sarcastically) Well, isn’t he a character.

CONNIE
Anyway, nice to meet you guys...do you want to order anything?

DUSTIN
Yeah, can I get a chocolate sundae, Lijah?

ELIJAH
Sure. I’d like one too, if that’s not too much trouble...Connie.

CONNIE
(starts preparing the orders) Oh, no problem! I mean, it is my job.

ELIJAH
Are you getting anything, Richard?

RICHARD
No, I’m good.

ELIJAH
Simon?

SIMON
N-no thanks. I think I’ll just have a look around.

SIMON gets up and walks off.

CONNIE
Here you go.

ELIJAH
Thanks. C’mon, Dustin, let’s check this place out.

ELIJAH and DUSTIN leave.

CONNIE
Well, that Simon’s pretty quiet...

RICHARD
He’s always been that way. Quietest and most mature of his brothers. (beat) So...how are you doing, Connie?

CONNIE
Pretty well.

RICHARD
So who works here? Still you and Jack and Eugene?

CONNIE
Jack fills in once and a while, but he’s running his own antique shop. Nick Mulligan works here now, but I’m on my own today. Eugene took off a while back and Whit’s over in Connellsville.

RICHARD
(surprised) Mr. Whittaker came back? (whistles) Guess I’m pretty behind the times, huh?

CONNIE
You didn’t know?

RICHARD
Nope.

CONNIE
Well, sit down. We have lots to talk about then.

SCENE NINE — Whit’s End Bible Room
SIMON
Whew. Nice and quiet in here. I never knew that an ice cream shop could be so loud... (sits down) Now I can draw in peace.

(beat)

JARED
(slyly) Heeere you are...

SIMON
(indignantly) Would you quit following me?!

JARED
Who’s following who? As far as I know, I was here first. I saw you come in with Wooton and those other guys few minutes ago.

SIMON
(annoyed) Those "other guys" are my brothers and my cousin.

JARED
Interesting...

SIMON
(angrily) Why do you keep following me, DeWhite? Why can’t you just leave me alone?

NATHANIEL
(from across the room) Could you keep it down, Jared? I’m trying to read.

JARED
Sorry, Nathaniel. (to Simon) I’m sorry, but something tells me that you being here is...well, never mind. Sorry to have bothered you.

SIMON
Yeah, whatever. (sighs) I didn’t think moving would cause this many problems.

SCENE TEN — McAllister Park
RICHARD
So what’s buzzin’, cousin? How are things with you? I would have visited sooner if I had known you were here, but my parents told me you moved here only right before I came.

SIMON
(sighs) Things are fine. Dad’s been working nonstop; it’s like he’s obsessed with his new jobs, being a jack-of-all-trades and all. Elijah’s already made a lot of friends...you know how my twin is.

RICHARD
And you?

SIMON
I don’t know. I feel like something’s wrong and that there’s something missing. It’s been this way ever since...you know...the incident with Turner.

RICHARD
I know. It’s been bothering me, too. (beat) Dustin seems much better. Last I saw, he was in the hospital right before the operation.

SIMON
He’s okay, for the most part. Won’t be able to walk again, but he’s all right with that. But he’s had nightmares almost every night since he got home from the hospital. He keeps saying that Turner’s still after him. (sigh) There’s only so much a nine year old year old can take, y’know?

RICHARD
I know. (beat) Well, don’t look at me with a face like that! Talk to me. What do you think of Odyssey?

SIMON
Haven’t seen much, but I don‘t like what I see.

RICHARD
What do you mean?

SIMON
(angrily) Don’t you see? This place...this Odyssey...is exactly like Crailtown was before Turner came. When we moved here, I was thinking just that. The only people missing were you and Turner. And now you’re here! How much longer until Turner shows up?

(beat)

RICHARD
I don’t know what to tell you, Simon...except...I agree with you.

SIMON
(surprised) Really? (beat) Wow...

RICHARD
Keep your eyes peeled for anything unusual.

SIMON
I’ll do that. What about you?

RICHARD
I’m going to do what I do best. (dramatically) Surveillance.

SCENE ELEVEN — Odyssey Supermarket
SIMON
You got the eggs, Lij?

ELIJAH
Yep.

SIMON
You got the milk, Dusty?

DUSTIN
Uh-huh.

SIMON
Okay...checkout line!

(beat)

There are checkout sounds in the background.

DUSTIN
Simon?

SIMON
Yeah?

DUSTIN
Why’s Richard here?

SIMON
Didn’t you hear? He’s visiting.

ELIJAH
Something wrong with that, Dusty?

DUSTIN
N-no.

FEMALE CASHIER
And that’ll be four dollars and sixty-seven cents.

SIMON
Oh. (rummages through his pockets and takes out his wallet) Here.

FEMALE CASHIER
Thank you. Have a nice day, now.

SIMON
Yeah.

(beat)

SIMON, ELIJAH & DUSTIN leave the supermarket.

DUSTIN
(thoughtfully) If-if Richard’s here, does that mean that Turner Takuya’s here too?

SIMON & ELIJAH
No!

ELIJAH
Turner’s in jail, you know that, little brother.

SIMON
(sighs) Oh man, here come the DeWhite boys.

JARED
Hey, guys. What’s up?

ELIJAH
The sky.

SIMON
What are you doing here?

JARED
(sighs) Look, I’m sorry about what happened yesterday. Guess I got a little carried away.

SIMON
Uh-huh.

TRENT
Mr. Whittaker suggested that we show you guys around town.

ELIJAH
Cool!

DUSTIN
Can I go too?

TRENT
I’m not sure...with your wheelchair and all...

SIMON
(abruptly) Dusty’ll be okay. You guys can go. I’ll take the groceries and go home.

JARED
Wait a minute...aren’t you coming?

DUSTIN
Yeah, big brother, please?

SIMON
No thanks. (beat) See ya, guys.

SCENE TWELVE — Odyssey Elementary School Gym
TRENT
Need help with that, Dustin?

DUSTIN
(strains) No, I can handle it.

TRENT
But you’re in a wheelchair.

DUSTIN
(annoyed) Why do you keep bringing that up? Just because I’m in a wheelchair doesn’t mean I can’t set up a volleyball net.

The net collapses.

(beat)

DUSTIN
Never mind.

TRENT
Here, you take that end, I’ll get this.

DUSTIN
Thanks.

(beat)

TRENT
Y’know, I was wondering...

DUSTIN
Yeah?

TRENT
How’d you get in a wheelchair?

DUSTIN
(sighs) It’s ― it’s a long story. I don’t particularly want to go into it right now.

TRENT
Okay. Suit yourself. Coach Mason only said to set up one net; you want to go to Whit’s End when we’re done?

DUSTIN
Of course.

SCENE THIRTEEN — Whit’s End
Whit’s End door opens and closes.

CONNIE
So anyway, Whit, that’s all I know. Richard Maxwell’s back, and I told him about what’s been going on around here, but he didn’t tell me about himself. I don’t know; I just get the feeling that something’s wrong.

WHIT
Hmm...Jack told me he did take off rather quickly after getting out of the hospital...

STRANGER
(with authority) Excuse me?

WHIT
Yessir, how may I help you?

STRANGER
I happened to overhear part of your conversation...did you mention a Richard Maxwell?

WHIT
Yes, I did. Why?

STRANGER
(chuckles) Oh, I knew a Maxwell in my old neighborhood. Crailtown; perhaps you’ve heard of it?

CONNIE
Yeah, that’s the town that got hit by that weird epidemic a few years back, wasn’t it?

STRANGER
Yes. A tragic time.

WHIT
Well, Mr. ―

STRANGER
Takuya. Turner Takuya.

WHIT
I’m John Whittaker.

CONNIE
Connie Kendall.

WHIT
Well, Mr. Takuya―

TURNER
Listen, I really must be going. Thank you for your help!

TURNER goes to the door. The door opens and closes as he leaves.

CONNIE
Well! That was strange.

WHIT
Huh, you’re telling me. What did he mean by “help”?

Whit’s End door opens and closes.

DUSTIN
Mr. Whittaker!

WHIT
Oh, hi, Dustin. Hi, Trent. (beat) What’s wrong, Dustin? You don't look too good.

DUSTIN
(gasping) Wh-who was that man?

WHIT
Well, I―

DUSTIN
(frantic) Please, just tell me who it was!

CONNIE
Dustin, calm down!

WHIT
I don’t know much, but he said his name was Turner Takuya.

DUSTIN
No. No! (hysterical) It can’t be! I thought he was in jail for life! I thought he was dead. (screams) You’re supposed to be dead! You are! You are!

TRENT
D-Dustin, what’s wrong? It was just some guy.

DUSTIN
“Some guy”? Trent, he was the person who put me in this wheelchair. (pants) H-he’s a murderer! He tried to kill me!

WHIT
(firmly) Dustin. Listen to me! Calm down right now and tell me what is going on.

DUSTIN
(tearfully; weakly) I c...I...can’t! I can’t... (passes out with a moan)

CONNIE
(shocked) Good grief, he’s fainted!

TRENT
(frantically) Jared said that when something like this happens, you should take the pulse. I-I’ll do it. (beat) It’s going like crazy! I-I don't know if he's still breathing!

WHIT
Oh, no...Trent, go and call an ambulance.

TRENT
Y-yessir. (runs off)

WHIT
Connie, you go and call his father. I’ll try to help Dustin.

CONNIE
Right. (runs off)

WHIT
(mutters in prayer) Lord, I sense there’s something at work here that we need to know about.

JARED
(from his vantage point in a nearby booth) Now what was that all about?!

I think that common practice dictates a "DUN DUN DUNNNN" at this point...
