I just finished studying this topic, and am now quite distressed. If all of these words are alternatives for using the Lord's name in vain, wouldn't that apply to all exclamations before you speak? It's the principle of the matter. If you say Egad! you are conveying the same message as if you said Wow! You are suprised. Does this make all exclamitory statments wrong?
I am begining to think this is all silly and made up info by man. God knows our hearts, and knows that we do not mean to take his name in vain saying Egad or Golly andy more than we do saying Yowee or Wow. Yowee has the same first letter as Yeshua (Jewish for Jesus). I think it's ridiculous that man came up with these words. The least they could have done is come up with non God Cursing words! This is so confusing... And now, I can't think of anything to say anymore... Everything... Jimmeny Crickets, NO can't use that! Jumpin' Jehosiphat? No probably outlawed as well, It's got the letter J! Idiotic culture! Making ridiculous words! It's Poppycock (or is that wrong as well)! I'm very distressed about this.
What I am feeling now is that the people who made these words and tagged the rules to go along with it are kind of like the Pharisees of Israel. They attach a bunch of strange rules to simple things, making our lives more complicated and driving a rift through our lives with God. Remember all the ridiculous rules they attached to the Sabbath?
I wonder what Jesus would say about people using My word, or my goodness, or Oh My Gosh, if served his ministry in these times.
It really is foolish that people would make these words and then have these rules. Perhaps they did it with making Chritstians upset in mind.
Here is my view of this: Everyone has some form of expression in a short phrase. Worldly People came up with saying Oh My --- . That was wrong because it used the Lord's name in vain. But to them it was just and expression of surprise.
Then Oh My Gosh was developed, Probobly so people could exclaim surprise without taking the Lords name in vain. When saying things like My goodness or something, you are not thinking of taking the Lord's name in vain. I know any time I ever said My goodnes, their was no contempt for the Lord in ym saying. It was just something to say. Therefore, If you are exclaiming, is their really any difference if you say My Gosh or Wow? What is the difference. Then are they both bad?
Now, I don't say Oh my gosh, it's just not a phrase I use. But I do use some old English like My Goodness, or sweet mother of mercy or something like that. Does that make them wrong since they are exclamations? It is so confusing. |

Eugene: Be very careful before you tell fellow Christians they are trying to burden you with unnecessary laws and regulations. Jesus' condemnation of the Pharisees did not focus on their laws but rather that they were hypocrites. They themselves intentionally did not follow all of God's Laws!
It has been shown that many exclamations are euphemisms for words that should not be said or used in such a way. You cannot deny that. What you can deny, if you wish, is that it is a sin to say a euphemism instead of the actual word. I know people who believe this way but my perspective is this: Why must I say a euphemism? Not all words are euphemisms (though I would suggest a study of the word's history to ensure this) so there are other options. When I came to the realization that expressions I used were euphemisms, I stopped saying them. Is it easy? No, it is an exercise in self-control.
God hates having His name taken in vain. Might a euphemism for His name be doing just that? When we have to give account to God for every word we have said, will He mind?

I meant no offense to any Christian or anyone on this board. I was referring to the people who originated cuss words and their alternatives.
And I have learned a lot through this. I'm just upset that these words have to be there in the first place.

You fail to understand the issue. It's not that they are exclamations of surprise, shock or what have you, but that they are misuses of the name of God.
"Wow" is not the same at all. It is not an alteration of any expletive or form of taking the Lord's name in vain.
At issue is not which letter a word starts with, but where it came from. The words and phrases you mentioned are all variations on words and phrases that are undeniably wrong.
I don't think you are comprehending this, else you wouldn't have said "I am begining [sic] to think this is all silly and made up info by man." Try to understand: men didn't take pre-existing oaths and create previously nonexistent connections to swear words. Those words and phrases you are quoting are directly derived from those words. |

Why would someone do that? :(
Alright Jared, I see what your saying there. Which is why I was confused even listening to Oddysey the other day. They were inside a Diner, and The lady working the counter kept Exclaiming the names of presidents when something happend, example: Well, Calvin Coolidge!.
Is that a replacement for saying Jesus's name as an exclamation?

What I'm saying there is somehow these "alternatives" have found their way into culture. I'm upset that these words, and not something harmless, have seeped into the minds of the world.
And about the Silly and made up info, what I meant was a person had to have developed these phrases. I mispoke, it wasn't trying to say that the information of what the words mean was made up by man. I understand that the words always have meant what they meant. I'm only upset that man popularized these sayings. |

It's bizarre, but no, it isn't the same, since "Calvin Coolidge" is not a euphemism for an inappropriate word or use of a word.
I think we can all agree, though, that "Why, Lyndon Johnson!" would be a particularly cruel thing to say to a person. |

So what it really all comes down to is that the words used in popular slang, when traced down to their roots, mean God and Jesus... Wow. That's very sad that people made these phrases.
Alright, You've cracked through my thick head Jared. I see that it's not about The way you use a phrase but about what the phrase means. Still, it saddens me that so many use these phrases without knowing that they are taking the Lord's name in vain.
I still disagree with a few things...
EDIT:
It's pretty funny how this started out as a Veggie tales thread. It's even more funny that I rarley use slang at all but was so big on this subject. I was just extremely curious. I had never thought of this before.
If I use any slang at all it's from the old days. Could any of you experts tell me if these phrases are ok? These are pretty much anything I've ever said that I might question.
-Groovy
-Oh dear.
-My word.
-Far out.
-Swell
-Sweet mother of mercy!
-What the Muffin?
-What in the world?
-What on earth?
-Great Scott!
-Zounds!
-Blimey!
EDIT AGAIN:
Aaah! I just researched my last question and much of those words are on the no list. I... really don't know what to say right now (partley because I might say something else bad). This is horrible. All the funny words are evil. ...Erg... Ugh... Eck. My entire vocabulary will soon be reduced to grunts. This is really heavy. Bummer deal. |

Eugene, would you mind explaining what's wrong with those words? I've used some of them, and if they're something I should not be using, I at least want to know why. |
