The night of prayer had turned into a night of silence. The only sound was the rain from outside, couppled with the occisional clap of thunder. Other, smaller sounds, kept Jack alert and guessing. He reconized the sounds of breatheing, that of a working refregiorator...and there was something else playing on the edge of his sences. Jack wasn't sure if he heard it or if it was just a feeling. Ether way, he was yet to identify it.
Tom was half-asleep in his recliner, barley aware of anything. Little Betheney had curled up at the edge of the couch and fallen asleep. Ellen leaned aginst her husband's shoulder and Jack doubted if she was awake or not. Ben was awake, but he was silent. Jack sat in a nearby rocking chair.
They would've gone to bed hours ago, but something kept everyone up. It was problly the feeling of helplessness that still mannaged to linger arround the house. They wanted to be doing something, even something as small as waiting up for a phone call.
Jack would be lieing if he said he didn't enjoy the silence. It gave him time for things like thinking and praying. Silence was quite easy to enjoy, and the sound of rain on a rooftop never failed to relax him. That and the easy rocking underneath him made it difficult to keep his eyes open.
His thoughts blured for a moment, then cleared. He should really get some sleep, it had been a long day. Still...he didn't have permission to go upstairs and use the guest room. While he knew Tom would become irratated at his politeness the next morning, Jack resolved to spend the night in the chair. It wouldn't be the first time he'd fallen asleep in a rocking chair.
Closing his eyes, Jack waited, still in silence, for sleep to overtake him.

| Hey! Two chapters ago everyone was begging me to poast again...now I get zero replies. I know it was short...but I was crunched for time and working on something else at the same time. Plus describing silence for very long isn't easy. Don't worry, intresting things will start up again in the next chapter. Just please, please review. |

Awesome!
Like I said, I would like to know where your "other" stories are. Do you write on fanfiction.net, or TF.n? |

Richard had barley gotten any sleep the night before. The peace that had settled over him when he'd prayed had converted to this bizzare enegery that just wouldn't go away. As a result, the minute the clock read something that resembled a decent hour, 6:00AM, he'd been up and searching the shealves for a bible. It hadn't been to hard to find one, and since then, he'd been sitting, reading, soaking up the Word of God like a spoange.
Not long after finding the bible, he'd gotten some scrach paper and had jotted down all his thoughts, questions, and comments. He now had two or three pages worth...and this was AFTER he'd gotten a concordance involved in his own, private bible study. He didn't know how long it had been since he started...but Nick was the first to stir.
"What the..." he said sleepily.
"Morning." Richard responded absently, fliping near-franticly through the concordance.
"What are you doing?" Nick asked.
The question prompted Richard to realize just how he looked. cross-legged on the floor, Bible on his lap, Concordance in front of him, and about five peaces of scrach paper at various points arround the front of him. Most blank, one full, the other about halffull of his own handwriting. To someone who didn't know what he'd experenced the night before, he had to look rediculious. Still...he couldn't quite bring himself to care. "Studying."
"Oh." Nick asked, then, most likely to avoid akward silence. "What on?"
"Right now, prayer."
"Oh."
For the first time since he'd opened it, Richard closed the bible he'd found. "Nick...just so you know, Aubery's a real special girl. She won't admit it, but she's worried sick about you."
Nick, startled by the abrupt change of subject, did a doubble-take, then glanced over at the still-sleeping Aubery, and asked "worried? Why?"
"Well...nearest I can figure, it's because you're not a Christian."
"Oh. That." Nick responded.
Richard smirked slightly at him. "That's how I always use to react when someone mentioned my lack of faith too. You'll come arround sooner or later."
"Look, I'm just not sure I buy all this, alright?"
"Hey, no prob. I was there not too long ago. You'll have an eayser time of it then I did." Richard paused, then said "Aubery's gonna be good for you, Nick. But whatever you do, don't hurt her. K?"
"Why? You getting all protective of her?"
"No." Richard answered quickly. "I'm speaking from experence. Listen to me...it really wasn't that long ago when I practically WAS you. Except I had a history with the people here that wasn't too pretty. Now, I'm pretty much forgiven all arround...but I've still got one major regret from that time that I'll have a hard time getting to go away. THAT'S why I told you not to hurt her."
Nick still didn't seem to get it. "Whatever you say. But just so you know, I'd never hurt Aubery anyway."
Unbeknownst to both men in the room, they wern't the only two awake.
Aubery had heard the whole thing.

The next morning, Whit was fine. His head was still a little tender, but outside of that there wern't any problems. A fact Sam was VERY glad of.
Colin seemed even more carefree then he'd been the night before, if that was even possable. The boy was estatic when he found that the power was back, and had begged to use the immagionation station. Justin had eventually taken his little brother.
Sara practically clung to Whit. She was feeling very protective after the little incident last night. Sam knew the feeling.
She sat at the counter, thinking. The kids would be going home as soon as Justin and Colin finished their adventure. Her shift at the shop didn't begin until three...but until then, Sam really had nowhere to go.
"You're welcome to come with me to Odyssey." Whit offered suddenly, as though he'd just read her mind.
She hadn't realized until the offer was made that she'd already made up her mind what she was going to do. "No...I'm going home myself."
"Are you sure?" Whit asked, concerned.
Sam nodded. "I don't know how...but God did something in me last night. It's like...suddenly I'm ten times stronger then I was before. I'm up to the task of helping my brother. It won't be much at a time, and I'll still work here...but I won't be running from him anymore."
Whit smiled. "Good."
Sam sighed. Good? somehow, good didn't quite seem an adiquete word for the situation. Then, she remembered. God desceribed the creation of the entire world as "good." so...yeah. Good pretty much covered it.

The next morning, the power was back. As was the phoneline. Tom had called Whit's End, and to everyone's releif, Jason had answered. He'd repoarted that Connie, Mitch, Nick, Aubery, and, to Tom and Jack's surprise, Richard Maxwell, had spent the night there. Jason had said they were all still sleeping, but he'd get Aubery back over as soon as possable.
Since the phone call had ended, the atmosphere had turned to almost that of a party. Ellen made some snacks, Tom put some music on, and there was some lively conversation.
"You know, we should really do this more often." Ben commented.
"Do what?" Jack asked humeriously "have power outages?"
"No." Ben responded, chuckleing. Then, more seriously "I mean, get together to pray...spend all night. Then a party the next morning."
Jack thought for a moment. "You know...that may actully be a good idea."

Next chapter is the last one! Oh...and please, please respond, O.K.?
Next Chapter, I'll address my opening plot of Jason's nightmares again. And you'll all find out what happens to Richard Maxwell! |

| Only one more chapter? I can't wait! I like hearing from Richard Maxwell as a responsible person, using his own past to help others towards a better tomorrow. (Yeah, that sounded dumb, but whatever). Great story! |
