Alright! Alright! I get the picture!
In truth...I almost have forgotten about this story. I've got so many other fanfictions in the works...
Alright, I'll tell you what, I'm guarenteed to do at least one more chapter by the end of the week, alright? Promess.
Now...just to read through this whole thing again...not to mention get my train of thought for it back. Ug...this isn't gonna be easy. |

Yes, it's finally here. Here we go!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"There's somewhere we havn't checked yet." Colin, although the youngest, seemed somehow the most sensable.
Sam looked at him and asked "Where?"
"Basement." Colin responded simply.
Sara's eyes widened at the thought. "Basement?" she echoed. "No way! Uh-uh. No! Basments are scary! 'specially in the dark."
Sam sighed in fustration. Colin was right...the basement was pretty likely. It felt like they'd searched every inch of this place. Over an hour had passed, and the only explanation for why he hadn't come out of hiding by now was that he was sound asleep. Not that Sam would be surprised if that were the case. Mr. Whitticar was an old man, no matter how strong he seemed.
Stephen finally spoke, but he sounded rather absent as he did. "I just hope Mr. Whitticar's not hurt."
And there was another possability. Not that Sam wanted to think about it...
Power outages at night were suppose to be fun. A time for candles and ghost stories. She had some doozies of ghost stories bound to make even Mr. Whitticar jump. Yet thanks to this stupid game...Mr. Whitticar was missing and the search was runing all the fun they should've had. She couldn't be mad at him though. He'd saved her earler that night...more in the emotional sence then in the physical.
She owed him, bigtime.
"Stephen, take your sister to the sodafountian. Colin and I will check the basement."
If Mr. Whitticar was hurt, or if he were just a deep sleeper, the last thing Sam would need on her hands was a freaked out six-year-old.
As if on cue, Colin yawned. Sam suddenly felt the an idoit. It was so easy to forget Colin was barley four...he was so mature. Kid must be worn out by now. Before she could take her words back though, Stephen took Sara by the hand and led her off to the front room.
"Well kid, looks like it's just you and me." Sam forced a light tone into her voice...and hoped that it wasn't too obviously forced.
Colin nodded solomly. "I'll help you find Mr. Whitticar." he promessed.
*************************************************************
Whit stired slowly. What was going on? Why was he laying on a staircase?
A sharp pain in his head answered his question. He remembered playing hide-and-seek, realizing a lot of time had passed, coming out of hiding, finding out the power was out, and then falling on the stairs. He'd hit his head...
Now, Whit groaned. His head throbbed. Pulling himself to a sit the best he could, Whit touched where it hurt the worst. Seemed as though it had stopped bleeding...that was good.
Right then, he heard people coming down the stairs. He turned and looked over his shoulder, not that it did much good, all he could see were outlines in the darkness down here. But the outlines alone were enough to let him know who they were.
"Mr. Whitticar!" Colin yelled, bounding down the steps, stoping only when he was about a step above him. Sam hurried down at about the same rate...but about five steps behind.
"Mr. Whitticar, are you alright?" she asked, holding down a hand to help him up.
Whit took it, and got unsteadadly to his feet. "Yeah...yeah...I fell though. I think I have a cut on my head..."
"Let's get you upstairs." Sam said. Whit knew better then to argue. Not only was going upstairs best...but he'd learned never to argue with a woman when they took on that motherly tone.
*************************************************************
Whit hissed through his teeth.
"Sorry." Sam muttered. "I warned you it would sting."
"Yeah..." Whit responded. "I know..." grunting again, Whit added "You'd make a very good nurse, you know that?"
Sam grinned. "Yep, so I've been told. That's how I got my start working with kids, playing nurse. I was forever the one everyone came to to fix everything from scraped knees to broken bones. Kinda died down when my brother turned criminal though."
Whit smiled. Sam was really such a complecated girl...not much more then a child herself. An expert storyteller who captured the essence of human emotion in almost every origional story she spoke. She was protective, and good-natured. He'd been thinking about it the whole time...while her immage left a good deal to be desired, she made a wonderful adation to the Whit's End 'family' and it was about time she was told so.
"You know Sam...I really think you've proved yourself tonight."
Sam looked startled for a moment, then carefully set two bandaids over the long cut. "I say you take that to a doctor as soon as possable." she commented, an abrupt change of subject.
Whit took the hint. So she didn't take well to complements, eh? Too bad, 'cause if she kept this up the whole time she worked there, she'd be getting alot of them.
"You know, it's late. I think we should be getting to bed." Stephen suggested.
"Sara's already asleep." Colin put in. "Can we all go to bed now?"
"Sounds good to me." Whit answered, streaching.
"You." Sam cut in, pointing at Whit "Won't get much sleep tonight. I'm not sure if you have a cuncussion or not...so I'm gonna play it safe and wake you up every couple hours with a bunch of annoying questions."
Whit groaned. "No wonder you were called on for medical help. You act just like a nurse."
"Thank you."
*************************************************************
Despite best intentions, Sam wasn't the one to wake Whit up with questions. Less then half an hour after settleing in in the libary, and Colin was still up.
"Mr. Whitticar?"
Whit snapped awake, and looked at the small boy, barley sitting up. "Yes, Colin?"
"You asleep?"
"I was." Whit responded honestly. "What's the matter?"
"Why did Sam's brother hurt my daddy?"
Ouch. "I really don't know, Colin." Whit answered honestly. "Maybe because he was just hurting so bad himself he had to take it out on someone else. Maybe he was just confused."
While Colin seemed to accept that an answer, he wasn't finished. "Sam's good at making people quit hurting, isn't she?"
Whit nodded. "Yes, she is."
"Then why can't she stop her brother from hurting?" Colin asked. "If she did...then maybe he'd stop hurting other people."
Childlike innocence. Such a precious thing. "I think Sam's brother is hurting diffrently. It's not a physical hurt...like me or even your daddy. It's a mental kinda hurt. I think Sam's brother has very hurt feelings."
Colin pouted. "I don't like it when people have hurt feelings." the boy's eyes brightened suddenly "Can we make him feel better?"
"Well...with God's help, anything is possable."
"Even my daddy getting better?" the boy asked.
Whit nodded. "Even your daddy getting better."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whiew! I'm amazed...I wrote this entire chapter in about an hour. Wow...
Well...I've got some more brainstorming to do before the next one...but turst me, the delay shouldn't be nearly as long. |
