I would agree - in church.
When meeting together to worship the Lord, one should wear his or her best. That means that men shouldn't walk into church wearing blue jeans and women shouldn't come in wearing pants.
But if a woman does her gardening or things like that wearing pants, where's the problem in that? I know that I'm usually the one accused of legalism, but I think that those who adamantly declare that women can never wear pants are being legalistic.
In church, it would not be advisible and is certainly not respectful. But at home, doing around-the-house work? I see no problem with it. |

Forgive me for being a little taken back by this. In this post, you are talking about how you don't think women have the right to wear pants even at home, but in other, you are saying that you think you have every right in the world to steal any music you want.
There's a discrepancy here.
Oh, and by the way: I highly suggest that in the future, you take a moment to capitalize the name of God. |

Well, I was waiting for this topic to come up. But I sure wasn't gonna be responsible for starting it! Goodness knows where this arguement may lead... please lets be respectful and civilized okay?
My family are fairly conservative Christians. Over the past year or so we have done a lot of "getting back to the basics" type of things. Some by choice and others by God's design. We ended up moving to North MN farm country do to my dads job situation, and the house we moved into was well, to say it was a dump would be a compliment. Three bedrooms, one bath for 11 people. And nothing in this house works the way its supposed to. We have also given up television. We still own a TV, VCR, and DVD player, but we don't have an antenna so we don't get any channels at all. Movie watching tends to only happen on Fridays (movie day) or days when the weather has kept us inside for so long that we are going batty! But we still have the computer/internet. Afterall my dad teaches computers, so thats kind of a given.
My family also homeschools, which I know many of you do here. Being a homeschool mom, my mother has connections (mostly online ones) with other Christian homeschool families. There is a group she is connected with, and most of the women in that group are strongly convicted on wearing dresses only. They have many reasons for it.
| Quote: | | I have several main reasons why I personally wear dresses only. One, is to appear distinctly feminine. When I am wearing dresses, jumpers or skirts, I can NOT be mistaken by a man! I know some like to think that they have cute feminine pants, but pants are still men's clothing in our day! Second, and this is the major reason, is to not cause a man to stumble. I have also heard some say that a man is responsible for his thoughts. Yes, that is true, but it is our responsibility to dress in a way that would not provoke those thoughts. Third, yes there are some Scripture references. The one in Deuteronomy does still apply to us today. In our current times, men always wear pants or shorts, and if we are not to wear the same type of clothing as men, then we would certainly need to wear dresses (skirts, jumpers)! |
Here is another link that talks about dresses only on women
But me personaly, I don't agree with all their reasons. At church, yes I feel it is very important.. At church we are in God's house, and we should dress accordingly. A friend of mine once said that going to church was like our "date with God". Yes, we spend time with Him during the week, talking and communicating, like we would with any friendship. But Sunday is the day we are going to His house, and its like our date. If you are going on a "date" with someone you want to look your best, and that is what going to church is like. Did that make sense?
I do dress modestly, I don't want my clothing to draw attention to my body in ways that may cause others to stumble. That is my duty to my brothers in Christ, to help their eyes stay focused on God, and not on fleshy things. But I do not see that women wearing pants is a problem. As long as they are modest (ie not to tight, to low riding) I garden, I work with animals, I run around and climb trees. For me, pants are just fine. |

I am woman, hear me roar! *laughs*
Sorry, but I'm a tough cookie and you won't find me sittin' at home and darning my husband's socks. Not that I ever plan on getting married... |

OK, I'm going to jump in here.
distinctly feminine.... well, hopefully any female will look feminine regardless. If someone is afraid that they look like a guy, simple. Refrain from cutting your hair.
pants are still mens clothing.... so? In the Bible days, there where most likely gender neutral clothes items. I don't really know, though. Like it or not, pants are now womens clothing, too. 100 years ago it would definately be wrong for a woman to wear pants, because it would be dressing like a guy. But now, most women in this country wear pants. Traditionally, pants where a guy thing. Things change. If you want to stick to outdated traditions, fine. But it's OK not to. Besides, that would bring up the issue of kilts, robes, etc. Are kilts OK for guys because they are traditionally a guy thing? Well, pretty soon, if not already, pants will be traditional American women garb. In which case, assuming tradition defines whom the clothes belong to, it will be alright for future generations to wear the female pants of the past. Why wait? Why rely on bygone generations? Right NOW, pants are acceptable for a female to wear. I don't feel the need to stick to traditions, just current standards of dress.
causing men to stumble... you are absolutely right. We shouldn't provoke thoughts. However, that can be as easily done with a dress as with more modern styles of clothing. Dresses can be immodest. Pants and shirts can be immodest. Dresses can be modest. Pants and shirts can be modest. I don't see the difference.
Does anyone disagree?
scripture references.... do you mind telling me exactly which you are reffering to? |
