Ah. Just for the record, I'm wearing a skirt today. But it's one of my Ms. Parker ones...

Well, since you asked, I'll just say that I believe that women should dress modestly. However, just because you're wearing a skirt does not neccesarily mean you are modest - and in some cases, just because you are wearing pants does not mean that you are not modest. I've seen some pants that really look plenty femenine, and really aren't much of a temptation to me. While at the same time I've seen skirts that have "rips" half way up, or that are so strait that the person can barely walk, or that only cover the area a foot above the knees that are really worse than pants.

For certain chores, it might be better to wear femenine-style pants than skirts, but I am of the opinion that modest skirts are definetly the way to go in the general public, and definetly at church.

Basicly, it's like Hawkeye and a few others here pointed out. Run your clothing past your brother/husband/father to see if it is appropriate.

We are commanded not to be a stumbling block to those around us - you know, it's very sad how statisticly the number of rapes and sexual assaults have drasticly risen over the last few years. Most of the time it's blamed on the men's lack of restraint - and it's true, to some degree - but I wonder how many of those can be attributed directly to girls acting or dressing in an immodest fashion.

My sisters wear skirts or dresses all the time, and I really respect them for it. I wish more women would take the initiative to do likewise.

Actually, the whole issue of dress in this situation was not started by a tradition, it was started by God. Refer to Deuteronomy 22:5. While modesty is a must, the basic idea behind who should wear what is an issue of distinction between the genders more than one of modesty.

I have seen the word "legalism" or "legalistic" thrown around a lot in this thread. Legalists in the Bible were certain Jews that thought that the Gentiles had to follow Jewish traditions in order to be saved. If a person believes that a lady should wear only skirts/dresses that person is not a legalist. If you think that someone is lost because they wear pants then you would certainly be a legalist.

All right, I'm late on this discussion too.... for some reason, it just didn't interest me until I was bored stiff and needed something to do.... besides clean....

I hardly ever wear skirts. I only own one skirt and one dress--and I've worn them both once.

I try to be very careful in what I wear. Some things my mom says aren't too low-cut (and she has good judgement), I'm not comfortable wearing.

As for skirts in church, the only thing closest to a skirt I wear in church is a skort. Because I don't feel comfortable in them. I'm always afraid that if I sit the wrong way.... I'm also always uncomfortable wearing skirts, wondering if they're really as short as they feel. This distracts me from the main reason I'm supposed to be in church--to worship God! I'm so distracted, I can't worship.

Amen, sister. My mom has some interesting ideas about what's modest or not. Actually, She threw a big fit (For lack of a better word) about my wearing a kneelength black skirt, but has no problem with my wearing a shorter, tighter black skirt with a slit that stops two inches below my backside. I always wear shorts under that...

Hmmm, I think you misunderstood me. My mom has very good judgment. It's just that my comfort zone is a little smaller. And she's never forced me to buy or wear something I wasn't comfortable with. My preference is T-shirt high collars.
