| Another controversial subject. Anointing with oil. The town in which I have moved is relatively charismatic. I just don't get it. |

| Well, they do it at my non-charismatic Baptist church, and though I don't know off-hand, I'm pretty sure that it is mentioned in the Bible. |

James 5:14
"Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord." |

| OK, yeah, that's pretty much what happens at my church. It was just sorta weird, cause our other church never did anything like that, even if they sorta believed in it. |

| Yeah, I think it's okay, presuming they don't have big wrestling matches in a vat of it. |

Well, unlike speaking in tongues, I don't think that annointing with oil is something that has passed. I don't have a problem with a church doing it or not doing it. It has no power... It's just an act to show complete submission to God.
Is it needed? No...
But then again, it's in there for a reason.
In my church, it's not a normal practice. It just SEEMS charasmatic, I guess, so we avoid it. But once, we had a man with terminal cancer who requested that when the deacons pray with him, they annoint him with oil. They don't generally have oil on hand, so one of them rushed to the church kitchen. They didn't find much and had doubts about annointing someone with Crisco. (One quickly ran to a local store and got oil, by the way.)
By the way... (and this isn't DUE to oil annointing but just to the power of our Lord) ... that man with TERMINAL cancer is completely well again!
In conclusion, I think annointing with oil is a good practice that more should follow. There's no sin in practicing it nor in not practicing it, but as it is an act of submission, I think we would be better off if it were used more. |

Well, in our church it isn't done very often, but we do use it. We annointed every room in our house before we moved 9 years ago. And just under a year ago, our youth pastor had all of the leaders annoint their kids with oil.

| If it was good enough for the people in the Bible, it's good enough for me. We anointed our children's pastor's house when she was really sick, and she got better right after. |
