| I heard something interesting on the Chicago all news radio station. John McCain threatened Major League baseball w/ Federal Legislation if they did not crack down w/ sterner measures on players that use steroids. What on earth??!! Where does a senator get off threatening FEDERAL LEGISLATION for a baseball "crime." Why is the government getting involved in sports of all things. Aren't they supposed to be our recreation? I think we need to have some separation of church and sports! |

This has been major news for some time and I agree that it's nonsense. Now, I support the enforcement of drug laws (although I don't agree with all of the current legislation on that matter and will admit that some constitutional issues are raised), but dictating such policy for a private concern really crosses the line.
It's possibly only because Congress has leverage here due to another stupid, but long-lasting, policy. Every major sports league in the United States is in blatant violation of federal anti-trust law and Congress continually exempts them from it... They're basically saying, now, that if MLB doesn't do what Congress says, they'll allow the law to be applied.
If it sounds like a sort of blackmail, well, it is. |

I suppose major-league sports could be considered interstate commerce, as there is generally large amounts of money involved and an element of competition between states...
But this makes me lose the faith in the recent Congress... That, it could be argued, I never had in the first place.
Ah, the hazards of being a ConLaw student. Along with yelling "REPUBLIC" instinctively at any mention of "democracy." :P |
