| I believe that a day of rest is very important. God designed it that way. As was mentioned above, it is obviously necessary for certain types of work such as doctors, ambulance drivers, police and fire workers, etc. |

My belief (as a SDA who believes in RESTING on the seventh day sabbath) is as most of you have already said. In some cases it's OK to work on the Sabbath.
I myself work in a hospital, and most of the administration is SDA....however there has to be people there 24 hours a day 7 days a week to help care for the people and give them their medications and all that. I work every Saturday (Sabbath) from 4-8 PM because we are so under-staffed right now. My boss wanted me to work more, but because of wanting to at least be able to go to church and fellowship with other Christians we agreed for me to do the four hour shift so I'd be off for most of the Sabbath. Now my boss knows me well enough to know that I'm only doing this temporarily....as soon as we have enough staff there, I will expect the entire Sabbath off.
In the cases of people who work in hospitals, or police officers, and such, I think the concept of working on Sabbath is best summurized in Jesus' own words......."It is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."

I believe that sabbath need not be a specfic day, just one day each week. You work 6 days and not work on one of the seven. The day you dont work is your sabbath.
It could be saturday, or it could be sunday, Or it could be thursday. to me that is how it must be done. If there is a reason you must work on sunday because of the type of job, you should move your sabbath to a different day but observe it just as faithfully as you would if it were on sunday.
And the second thing Jesus taught is that we should do good on the sabbath. Wether its getting an ox out of a hole or helping a cripple or maybe helping an elderly person with something they cant do themselves. work is when you get money(or some other necessity of living your life). good deeds are when God gets glory. one is forbidden, the other is honorable. |

I believe the Sabbath should be a day of rest. And even though we take Sunday as our rest day, I actually believe Saturday is the 7th day and *ought* to be the day of rest. Should we not do any work? Only what is absolutely necessary. |

That's one point I have yet to see _every_ SDA agree on.....how much or what kind of work is OK on the Sabbath. Most feel that Friday is the prepration day and all the house cleaning and all the cooking for the Sabbath should be completed by sunset.....others don't see a big deal in cooking meals on Sabbath. There are some SDAs that don't agree with me that some types of work are OK on Sabbath and will tell you that NO work is to be done....regaurdless of what type of work it is.
Sometimes I watch my church and have to laugh. We know that Sunday worship came about mostly because of the Jews making Sabbath a burden, and yet many SDAs are doing the exact same thing. I've been reprimanded a couple of times by memebers of my church for watching videos on Sabbath afternoon........even though it was AIO or other Bible related stuff. They'll say I had six whole days I coulda watched TV that NO TV is to be watched on Saturday. Then there are others who do feel it's OK to watch Christian related videos or even go to Christian web sites on Saturday.....but still there are some that'll give you "the look" if you even think about turning your computer on during the Sabbath hours.
Peace Out

That's actually pretty sad if you think about it. I guess you find legalism in any church group. I have a group of friends who are Messianic...they do the same thing with the Sabbath. I personally believe fixing a meal and doing minor chores is all right. Even Jesus "worked" on the Sabbath!
Does your church/denomination also believe it's not right to do pleasure activities on the Sabbath? |

Again....some do, some don't.
When I was living in the SDA college town of Collegedale, TN I don't remember a single Sabbath afternoon that a bunch of us didn't go hiking or rock climbing or caving after church. To us, it wasn't neccesarily the activity....it was the fact that we were able to get away from work/school work and just hang out with other Christians out in nature. Sabbath after church was usually the only time we could all get together and do stuff like that since the other six days of the week were completely full.
I myself get online fairly regulary on Sabbath afternoons....while there are some out there who, as I said before, won't even turn the computer on during the Sabbath.
Most SDA kids/youth stay busy during Sabbath with games....some of them are everyday games with a Christian twist on it. One game I've seen a lot of the youth play is A B C Scripture where the players go through the entire alphabet and each person has to come up with a different scripture that starts with that letter.....for instance A...And we know all things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 B...Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3 and so on.........the difficulty in this game............the players are not allowed to look up the scriptures in their Bible (the verses must be memorized) unless someone challenges (says that the verse was quoted wrong).
So there are a lot of "pleasure activities" we get into on Sabbath, though it may not be the same activities we get involved in during the rest of the week.
Peace Out

| We should all be careful not to make the Sabbath a day we are a slave to like the Pharisee's did during Jesus' day. Sunday should be a special day to worship God - however I don't think you need to do nothing all day. After Jesus was still being productive on the Sabbath. As for work, I think that if all possible you should try to have Sunday's off. If it's not possible, I think the least you can do is make it to church for at least one service. |
