Sydney laid it out quite well.

There are languages other than what man knows, but God can endow any language on anyone who he gives the gift of tounges on. Sometimes He may give a human language, like hebrew or Greek, or in modern day, Spanish or German, or God may give a special language that isn't a known human language. I myself have the gift of speaking in tounges, but I personally dont understand it. That is a separate gift.

What good is tounges? Well, if the tounges language is a human language, then it is rather obvious. I heard a story about a missionaary couple who couldn't speak a lick of Spanish, but god laid it on their hearts to go to Mexico. Upon arrival, God gave them the gift of tongues, but Spanish tongues.

I the case of the non human tongue, there are several reasons. Firstly, when you speak the language (figuratively or literally) of a loveed one, oyu show your love for them. Secondly, tongues is proof of the Holy Spirit. This is still essential today.

If there is no one present who can translate, the person should not speak in tongues. If no one can understand the person, they probably arent speaking tounges. Many people will try to appear to be holy by pretending to speak in tongues, but if anyone is present who can interepret, then they will know the person is not following God in that act.

I have to say that tongues is definately not made up, becasue my brain is not working at all, or very little when I am speaknig in tounges (to God), but the words just flow better than my English!

Thank you Hawkeye, Sydney, and Mandy. Jared, take that as my answer to our discussion.

But there is always someone there who can translate - God! He's the only one that needs to understand! I find, often, that praying in tongues is more powerful than regular prayer. I feel God's presence when I pray in tongues... not that I don't when I don't pray in tongues (anyone follow that?). But I also find that the spirit touches the person I'm praying for more often when I pray in tongues.

Yeah, that is basically what I have observed o'er the years... so I really don't see how it could not be for today, or whatever.

EDIT: The Top Crusader stopped over to get the keys to Town Hall, so he posted from my account. Just wanted you to know that the religious views expressed here are not those of Jared Walczak. Wink

I'll get into this debate again later....

I just am replying to say that I didn't write the above post (which formerly looked as if I had written it due to Top's name-changing scheme) and I didn't write that edit, either! Yellow Smile

Well, sometimes God uses tongues as a way to deliver prophecy (tongues) with confirmation (translator). But if someone speaks so that humans can hear, so that they can hear (I.E., its not just between you and God), then there should be someone present to translate. Why? Because firstly, there is no reason to speak 'publicly' to people if they wont understand. What good would it do if a pastor got up in front of a church and began speaking in a langueage few, if any spoke? No benefit. Secondly, what is to keep a Witch from comming into a church and speaking curses (in another language, such as Latin) and calling demonic powers into the Church and on people? They can claim it is tongues and appear to be praying for people, but they aren't.

Tounges, if not done just privately between you and God, NEEDS a translator.

But, yes, praying in tongues does have a slightly different impact than praying in a human (or native) tongue.
